5 Reasons why you need an Email List as a Blogger

Have you ever been restricted from using the social media? or your site banned by the search engines?  Getting banned either by the social media or search engines means that the only way you can get traffic to your site is through your email subscribers. Having an email list gives you an upper hand when it comes to controlling who visits your site and when. There several reasons why a blogger or business person needs to start building an email list now as enumerated below:

  1. An email inbox is a personal space – someone’s email box is more private unlike the social media where everything is in the open. With an email you get to build a relationship with your subscribers as you have more time with them.
  2. You own the list – The list belongs to you unlike the social media followers. The list is not owned by the email service providers. You can always download the .csv file from the email service providers. You are the only person permitted to send emails to the list. 5 Reasons bloggers need an email list
  3. You have full control – You have control over when people will receive your emails. Whenever you send an email out, you can immediately  drive traffic to your blog or website landing pages hence if you have something to sell, people will be there to listen and perhaps buy. When you post something on social media there is no guarantee that your followers will see them in fact at any time only a small percentage of your followers will see your posts.
  4. Automation – Automation makes email marketing a great tool, with a good email service provider like GetResponse you are able to send customized automated emails to people e.g. you can send a particular email to new subscribers thanking them, or subscribers who subscribed 7 days ago etc.
  5. Email Converts better – The most important reason of all is that when someone is a subscriber, they are more likely to end up buying from you!

How to get started with Building an email list

For you to start building an email list, you need an email service provider to collect the emails and to send people emails from. These emails include automated emails where you write once and set it up to run on autopilot or broadcasts which you write and send immediately to many subscribers. I recommend GetResponse because it is easy to use, affordable and they have trial offer where you can use and test their services free of charge.

Some of the Best Email Services providers include:

  • GetResponse
  • ConvertKit
  • Constant Contact
  • iContact

  1. It’s ironic that you mentioned this because I am just in the process of learning how to set up an e-mail list. Perfect timing that I read this article!

  2. I always learn so much from you. Thank you for sharing your expertise. Email lists are next on my list to tackle so this article was super timely for me.

  3. I use Constant Contact. I feel that it has been a great service for me. I have an email list but it isn’t very big, still trying to grow it. Thank you for this post. Raheela

  4. Informative post! I have an email list on one of my sites and not the other. Both are fairly new, so I didn’t think it was important. You’ve given me some things to think about.

  5. Nice post i have started to build my mailing list reached 40 so a long way to go 🙂 but your post gives my more clarity on the things have t be done for the same. Thanks

  6. I’m always so bad with this, after reading your post, I should really have a closer look at this

  7. This is something I need to find the time to work on. I appreaciate recommended service provider! There are so many out there, it’s nice to have a place to start.

  8. Hey John, Cindy here.

It’s great you have so many comments!

I’m using my Gmail for my subscribers. I have less than 50, so it’s still do-able, yet, it’s a pain to keep up with. Constant Contact is too expensive for me now. I haven’t checked further. My email that comes with my WordPress site won’t keep my link live when I email it. Gmail does.

I’m stumped as to how to make $$ as my site is all about clothing remakes done frugally. No selling. I haven’t found suitable affiliates yet. Google Adsense turned me down, saying I didn’t have enough content…tho, I have TONS of content!

Yeh, I know, I need to read your stuff. And I will. Any help would be appreciated.

    1. Hi Cindy, You can use Mailchimp, they have a free service up to 2000 subscribers. Making money on a blog takes time. Focus on building an audience. You can even sell your own products on your blog.

  9. I am also trying to get some subscribers. But it seems to be difficult. I have designed some freebies but I have to really work hard on this one. Thanks for your tips John.

    1. This too is new to me, normally we know and use the most popular ones like Aweber, Mailchimp, GetResponse etc. Always good to compare and check the various services before settling for one.

  10. Great tips! Will definitely take into consideration when I start building the email portion of my blog ! Learned a few new things I didn’t know before! Thanks for sharing!

    1. I understand your frustration, but with a good plan, the list is a great way of building an audience for your blog, besides social media networks, besides you can sell products directly to the list subscribers.

  11. I strongly agree with you but I still find it very hard to actually build one. I even tried giving away free ebooks but it did not go through that well. I for myself know that I very rarely subscribe so I get why others won’t also. Any suggestions on how to get them to subscribe?

    1. If you check on my blog, I have a call to action Box, it is working well. There is no week that goes by, without getting new subscribers. Try to install a call to action, then put the URL of your subsriber form into it. Currently am using Boxzilla, its kind of a plugin.

    1. Hi, thanks for dropping by, with an email list you are able to focus any campaign that you have, whether it is promoting a blog post or a product. It has also been proved that an email lists converts more in terms of sales as compared to normal promotion on the website. Successful bloggers will tell you that an email list is a must have blogging component.

  19. This is something that I really need to tackle. I have a few subscribers but I’m at a loss for what to send to them and also how to get more subscribers. Thank you for your informative post!

  20. I had set up a list on mail chimp and have never actually emailed my susbcribers, which always seemed like a daunting task! This makes absolute sense and motivates me to actually just do it! TFS 🙂

    1. Hi Marcia, grateful for your comments. Maybe you can add automation. Mail chimp offers automation to every user even if you are using the free one. You only need to write ones and set it up.
